Twenty years on, Liverpool lay down another markerpublished at 21:50 25 May

On this day 20 years ago came what - for many - was Liverpool's greatest night.
A generation of fans saw what they had not been previously granted - a European Cup win. An older generation saw it for perhaps a second, third or maybe even fifth time… but never like this.
The events of Istanbul bonded families.
Stories of the night, of six second-half minutes, of trying to locate the Ataturk Stadium and of the parade all married together for an event mums, dads, grandparents and generations still shake heads disbelievingly over today.
On the night itself, one fan sporting a club tracksuit infamously broke on to the pitch. He danced with players, kissed the trophy and even featured in team photographs.
The gent in question was in fact a celebrated and respected full-back at non-league Vauxhall Motors. Even though he spent his weekends competing doggedly in English football's sixth tier at the time and knew the buzz of victory as a paid player, seeing his heroes come back from the dead somehow drew him to the pitch.
Watching in a Liverpool bar, his dad said later: "The greatest night in the Reds' history and my lad's got his face right in the middle of it."
The ending of a 21-year wait for a European Cup did strange things to people. Fast forward to the present and fans are living out the end of another wait as they witness the Reds lift the title in front of them for a first time since 1990.
There was no shootout on foreign fields. Instead, there were tears and shaking heads.
This was the weekend where Liverpool did not celebrate an anniversary but instead laid down a new marker in their history.
The weekend where Ed Sheeran and Sam Fender graced the city to unite revellers in song. The weekend where hundreds of thousands filled the streets for their team. The weekend where red smoke dusted the Liver Birds on the waterfront. If those birds could talk, what would they make of it all?
Perhaps they would say it has bonded families - again.

We asked for your views on and pictures after Liverpool finished their season with a home draw against Crystal Palace and lifted the Premier League trophy at Anfield.
Here are some of your pictures and comments:
Eugene: Back where we belong. Champions. Well done, boys. Glad TAA played. Last time. Klippity Klopp was there. Great day.
Chris: The PL belongs to us. Honestly and fairly, we didn't give it the finish it should have deserved and the fans deserve but we have won the jackpot and hopefully that gives us more grit and hunger to carry on to next season. Well done to all the players and fans for quite the season. Let's make sure we take what we have learned and go and get more silverware.

Karl: Well done. Head and shoulders above the opposition. Dominated the league. The team will be stronger next season with better full-backs and even more creativity up top. Can't wait!
Mia: Liverpool have had the greatest season - they deserve this so much and it is such an achievement for them. As well, Klopp - our best manager - has returned home for our achievement. Well done, Liverpool. Forever Red.

Ben: This is what dreams are all about. Before the season started, very few people would have realistically thought that the title would be going to Anfield but, as soon as City lost Rodri for the season and began to falter, Liverpool took full advantage and that is why they have lifted the trophy.
Tundi: Anytime Liverpool win the league it's a joyous occasion. Being able to share it with fans IN THE STADIUM is more than wonderful. Winners always want more, so I hope with the incoming gs that Slot's vision bears fruit. If Klopp was Shankly, Slot is Paisley so trophies galore is the minimum for the coming years.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot, speaking to Sky Sports: "It's always special to win something, but at certain clubs maybe a little bit more. I experienced this at Feyenoord where the fans are so ionate, and it's the same and more over here.
"I don't think you expect anything like this. If you look at the Premier League in the past few seasons, it was always a race to the end - two or three teams competing to the last day. To be part of it was already nice, let alone to win it."
On when his mind switches to next season: "Probably four weeks ago! It never stops. Even during the season you are looking to the next one. The sporting director is more involved in the long term than me, but he keeps me involved the whole time, as you can expect. The targets we have now did not come up last week. We've been looking at them for a long time."
On the defining moment of the season: "Thinking we would be part of it came early in the season after the United win. Before that we played good teams but to beat them 3-0 in their stadium when we expected them to be top six it was 'OK we can compete for the league this season'.
"Then after City away that was really a moment where I thought it was going to be difficult for other teams to end up above us."
Liverpool 1-1 Crystal Palace - sensational Salahpublished at 18:43 25 May

It had to be Mohamed Salah.
With just six minutes remaining of Sunday's season finale at Anfield against Crystal Palace, Salah stepped up to score the final goal of a memorable, title-winning campaign for Liverpool.
This was always going to be a day of celebration but for a long while it looked like it would be one that ended in a loss after Ismaila Sarr's early goal.
But Liverpool have often found a way and they did once again as they were rewarded for a strong finish as Salah finished from close range.
He was chasing a personal record of the most goal involvements but had been quiet for large periods until this late contribution.
It took his tally to 29 goals and 18 assists, equalling a record held by Alan Shearer and Andy Cole.

Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock, speaking to BBC 5 Live at Anfield: "Phenomenal. This is what we missed five years ago.
"It was soulless last time. This is what you wanted and this is what we expected today. "What an incredible atmosphere it is.
"I'm a little bit lost for words. This is brilliant to see the players enjoying it so much.
"Since FSG have come in, the thought behind what goes on is meticulous and I think that is credit to the way the club is being run since they came in. This will be so well planned over the past two or three months and I think the parade will be extra special again tomorrow.
"This is brilliant."
BBC Radio 5 Live chief football correspondent John Murray at Anfield: "Virgil van Dijk hoists the Premier League trophy and Liverpool are the champions for 2025. And this time we don't have to imagine all the people as in 2020. Today, we can share it as one.
"Red ticker tape all over Anfield. Red smoke everywhere, what a brilliant scene.
"There's a banner in the corner of the Kop which says, 'He brought us number 20 and his name is Arne Slot', and that's what they've got.
"This Premier League title means they're champions for a record-equalling 20 times.
"Red and white scarves raised on the Kop, in the Sir Kenny Dalglish stand, in the Main Stand, at the Anfield Road End.
"And the Liverpool players, all of the first-team squad, coaches, the lot of them, in one long wobbly line on the edge of the area in front of the Kop with the Premier League trophy on the penalty spot.
"Great scenes."

'One of the best individual campaigns in English football history'published at 12:12 25 May

Liverpool reporter Matt Addison and Reds fan Lewis Aspinall have paid tribute to Mohamed Salah's incredible individual season before the Reds' final game of the season on Sunday.
Salah was named Premier League player of the season on Saturday after a title-winning campaign in which he has ed 28 league goals - five more than anyone else - as well as 18 assists so far.
"He's just a freak of nature," said Aspinall. "He's in his 30s and playing like someone at their absolute peak. There's no denying just how top quality he is. He's the best right winger in Premier League history - maybe English top-flight history.
"When Arne Slot came, I don't think anyone could have thought that there was another level to Mo Salah than the one we were seeing. But he looks fitter than ever and some of the goals he's scored this season are unbelievable. He's just been monumental.
"He's one of the greatest players I've ever had the privilege of watching in a Liverpool shirt and this season is one of the best individual campaigns from any player in English football history."
Salah needs to score or assist against Crystal Palace to equal the record for most goal contributions in a Premier League season - with Alan Shearer and Andrew Cole the t-record holders on 47 - and Addison believes he belongs alongside the likes of Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush among the great Liverpool players of all time.
"I think so," he added. "It's hard to rank these players who come from different eras and have won different things but every box you look at with Salah he ticks.
"The goals, assists, work-rate, what he offers the team and trophies mean there is no doubt he is up there in the top three or four [greatest Liverpool players]."
Sutton's predictions: Liverpool v Crystal Palacepublished at 12:09 25 May
12:09 25 May
This is an example of an end-of-season game which is impossible to predict. It is the champions versus the FA Cup winners but I have no idea what kind of teams both managers will put out.
Liverpool have pretty much been on the beach since they secured their title at the end of April, while Palace left out several first-team players in their win over Wolves on Tuesday, with Eberechi Eze and Jean-Philippe Mateta only coming on for the last 10 minutes.
Palace are on a high after their Wembley win last weekend and if Eze and Mateta start against a weakened Liverpool side then I'd fancy the Eagles' chances. They have got some good players, and the pressure is completely off them.
You have to think that Arne Slot will go with a strong side here, though, to finish a great season with a win in front of the Anfield crowd before Liverpool get their hands on the Premier League trophy at full-time.
That's what I am guessing Slot will do, but it's a big gamble by me with my predictions title on the line.
Slot might do something very different and Eze and Mateta could cause carnage if Virgil van Dijk is left on the bench again, like he was in Monday's defeat by Brighton.

'I couldn't believe it then and I still can't now!' - Carragher on Istanbul 20 years laterpublished at 16:30 24 May

"I couldn't believe it then and I still can't believe it now!"
Jamie Carragher laughs as he recalls Liverpool winning the 2005 Champions League final against AC Milan in Istanbul.
Reflecting on a final for the ages, Carragher told BBC Radio Merseyside what it was like to be part of the team that came back from three goals down to beat the Italian giants on penalties.
"We were a defensively strong team but after conceding a goal in the first minute the game plan goes out of the window," he said. "I don't think the team Rafael Benitez selected helped with that because we were far too open. He tried to put more offensive players on the pitch but that blew up in our face.
"Coming off at half-time, I thinking 'I don't want this to be five or six nil. I had no thought in my head that we could come back from it and lift the trophy. I don't think anyone in the dressing room did.
"What we wanted to do was stop it from being embarrassing and ing this final for all of the wrong reasons.
"Most of us were shocked by what happened in the first-half and I don't us screaming or shouting at each other. I think we just knew what we were up against and that they had been too good for us.
"After Steven Gerrard scored we thought 'well the score line doesn't look too bad now,' but when it went to 3-2 you could sense the feeling was changing. AC Milan fans were getting more nervous and I felt like we could get the third goal because the momentum was with us.
"You could feel the energy in the crowd to go forward again and then Xabi Alonso scored.
"We hung on in extra-time. I had cramp and we were all getting tired, but we knew what was at stake and penalties would be a lottery.
"I can picture the lads' faces when we won and we were running from the line. I couldn't believe it then and I still can't believe it now!
"Everyone was just in sheer disbelief. I was very lucky to be part of it."
'A club using its history' - 20 years since Istanbul and a 'full-circle moment'published at 16:28 24 May

"History is only the base for us, but you're not allowed to carry around your big history with you in a backpack."
Jurgen Klopp's words from his unveiling as the new Liverpool manager in 2015 still resonate with me to this day. The club had just celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Reds' famous win over AC Milan in the 2005 Champions League final in Istanbul and this weekend we celebrate the 20th anniversary.
I was nine years old when Liverpool completed that miraculous comeback, but it was still a special night for me for so many reasons.
The watershed moment for me had been the 2003 Worthington Cup final and being able to stick it to every Manchester United fan I went to school with. Yet fresh off the back of the heartbreak of seeing Gerard Houllier depart and Michael Owen leave for Real Madrid, I wasn't overly ready to embrace new ideas and find new love.
I'd be lying if I said that the 2004-05 iteration of the Reds had completely captured my imagination. We'd gone from a Ballon d'Or winner to a couple of lads I didn't especially recognise and there wasn't tons of inspiration elsewhere around the pitch for a nine-year-old looking purely for footballing vibes at that stage.
AC Milan, by contrast, had vibes and football heritage in abundance. As their superstars cut swathes through Liverpool in that first 45 minutes, the idea of yet another football heartbreak so early in my career as a er completely overwhelmed me to tears. My brother, who was slightly longer in the tooth, had a similar reaction. My mum tried to reassure us that all hope was not lost.
'What does she know,' we agreed… We all know what happened next.
Those scenes caused my brother and I to go from despair upstairs to dancing on the dinner table. It was the greatest night of our lives to that point.
Luckily for us, Liverpool have since managed to add a couple more life-affirming moments to an already-rich tapestry. The symbolism of this weekend's anniversary and being able to see the Premier League trophy lifted by our captain in the flesh will not be lost on me.
A club using its history as a base but not carrying it round in their backpacks will experience yet another full circle moment.
