It was the year that started with Kylie Minogue releasing I Should Be So Lucky and featured hits for groundbreaking female rappers Salt-N-Pepa, as well as Terence Trent D’Arby and Glenn Medeiros.

There was also a debut for music’s most notorious mime artists Milli Vanilli, who had the world at their feet in 1988 but ultimately ended up pop pariahs. A lip-syncing scandal exposed the fact that Girl You Know It's True was actually a big lie.
